Footprints
A poem for All Souls' Day celebrating the art of Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller
They have gone beyond the veil
in whose footprints pilgrims tread
Lamps have blazed a shining trail
Bless them for slaying nature's dread
They have passed through fire and water
They have breathed earth's tainted air
They who've lent themselves to slaughter
now behold lands bright and fair
Now the Joy and now the Laughter
while on the onward journey bent
through landscapes in the lush hereafter
our planet's tokens wisely spent
